The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) has officially launched the South Africa African Minerals Governance Framework (AMGF) Assessment Report, a comprehensive study aimed at strengthening governance and sustainability in the country’s mining sector.

The report was produced in partnership with Expertise France and South Africa’s Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

It serves as a roadmap for reform, benchmarking South Africa’s mining governance systems against the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) and providing data-driven insights to support sustainable sector development.

According to AMDC, the assessment offers an in-depth analysis across six strategic pillars critical to mining sector governance.

These include legal and institutional frameworks, with a focus on licensing and contracting efficiency; geological information systems for effective mineral data management; and fiscal regimes covering revenue management and taxation.

The report also examines linkages and diversification opportunities to leverage mining for broader economic growth, strategies for the formalisation and support of artisanal and small-scale mining, as well as environmental and social governance measures aimed at balancing economic returns with social and environmental responsibility.

AMDC noted that the AMGF Assessment Report is intended to serve as a foundational reference for policymakers, investors, and civil society actors, supporting efforts to build a more transparent, inclusive, and competitive mining sector in South Africa.
