Ghana opens competitive bidding for Damang Mine Lease

The Government of Ghana has issued a tender notice for the selection of a strategic investor to take over the lease and operation of the Damang Gold Mine, as the current lease held by Abosso Goldfields Limited approaches its expiry in April 2026.
The tender, published by the Minerals Commission, formally initiates a competitive bidding process aimed at identifying a new operator for the mine.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources indicated that the process forms part of efforts to ensure a transparent and structured transition while securing a credible investor to continue operations at the site.
“The steps form part of efforts to secure a credible investor and operator through a competitive bidding process,” the Ministry stated.
The Damang Mine, regarded as a strategic national asset, has been a significant contributor to Ghana’s gold production, export earnings, and employment. Authorities say the transition process is intended to safeguard these contributions while positioning the mine for sustained productivity.
According to the Ministry, the competitive tender aligns with broader national objectives to promote increased Ghanaian participation in the mining sector, attract long-term investment, and maintain investor confidence.
The new operator is expected to usher in a phase of efficient, accountable, and sustainable mining practices, in line with Ghana’s resource management framework.
Government further assured that the selection process will be conducted transparently and in accordance with established regulations, as the country continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading destination for mining investment.
