Guyana shuts down six illegal mining operations, arrests 38 in Mazaruni district

The Ministry of Natural Resources, through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), has shut down six illegal mining operations in the Mazaruni Mining District in Region Seven as part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on unlawful mining activities.
The enforcement action was carried out on Tuesday following reports of illegal mining in the area. The operation involved a joint team from the GGMC Corps of Wardens and the Guyana Police Force.
According to the Ministry, the six illegal mining sites were operating within a quarry area in violation of mining regulations. The operation led to the arrest of 38 individuals allegedly involved in the unlawful activities.

Authorities also seized several pieces of equipment and machinery believed to have been used to support the illegal mining operations.
The Ministry said surveillance measures have since been put in place in the area to monitor activities and prevent the resumption of illegal mining.

Reaffirming the government’s position on the issue, the Ministry of Natural Resources stressed that illegal mining will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
