Ghana: Damang Mine set for competitive bidding ahead of April 2026 lease deadline

The government has announced plans to select a new operator for the Damang Mine through a competitive bidding process, as the current lease approaches its expiry in April 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources said the move is aimed at ensuring a transparent transition while attracting a credible investor to take over operations.
“The steps form part of efforts to secure a credible investor and operator through a competitive bidding process,” the Ministry stated.
The existing lease, held by Abosso Goldfields Limited, is set to expire next month, prompting authorities to begin the process of identifying a successor to sustain mining activities at the site.
According to the Ministry, the transition is expected to safeguard the mine’s continued contribution to Ghana’s economy, particularly in terms of gold production, export earnings, and employment.
The Ministry further noted that the process aligns with broader national objectives to promote increased Ghanaian participation and encourage long-term investment in the mining sector, while maintaining investor confidence.
Describing the Damang Mine as a strategic national asset, the statement emphasised its potential to remain a key driver of economic activity.
It added that the competitive tender process is expected to usher in a new phase for the mine, anchored on efficiency, accountability, and sustainable operations.
Authorities also assured that the selection process will be conducted transparently and in line with responsible resource management practices, as Ghana continues to position itself as a leading destination for mining investment.
