Ghana: GH₵1-per-litre energy levy has stabilised power supply

The Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the GH₵1-per-litre Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy has been effectively utilised and has contributed significantly to stabilising Ghana’s electricity supply.

The levy was introduced to raise additional funds to support fuel purchases for thermal power plants and to clear outstanding debts within the energy sector.

While its implementation has attracted calls for greater transparency from stakeholders, the government has maintained that the proceeds have been applied for their intended purpose.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, January 14, Kwakye Ofosu said the power sector faced widespread stability challenges when the current administration assumed office.

He noted that the sector has since achieved a level of reliability that has reassured consumers nationwide.

“What is clear is that the levy has been put to good use and has contributed significantly to achieving stability in the power sector,” he said.

“When we took over, there were challenges with electricity stability. I think all of us can attest that for several months now, electricity has been stable, and we have not experienced the outages that many had feared would occur.”
