The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced new directives requiring licensed jewellers to purchase gold exclusively through approved channels as part of reforms to strengthen traceability and formalisation in Ghana’s gold value chain.

The announcement was made during an engagement with members of the Jewellers and Fabricators Association, where GoldBod outlined new gold purchasing guidelines and jewellery licensing reforms.

Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., emphasised that jewellers are licensed as fabricators and not as gold buyers or traders.

As such, they are required to source gold strictly through authorised channels. He noted that direct purchases from miners or unapproved traders undermine traceability efforts and weaken ongoing sector reforms.

To promote local value addition, GoldBod disclosed that it will begin supplying refined gold and silver directly to licensed jewellers following the commencement of local refining operations in partnership with Gold Coast Refinery.

Effective March 2026, licensed jewellers will be able to purchase gold from GoldBod in standardized weights of 7.75 grammes, 15.5 grammes, and 31 grammes, subject to licence verification.

GoldBod said the engagement forms part of broader efforts to protect the integrity of Ghana’s gold value chain while enhancing transparency, regulatory compliance, and sustainable growth within the jewellery sector.
