The Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) has engaged the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey to explore lessons from Turkey’s scrap industry as Ghana prepares to roll out its scrap implementation policy.

The Chief Executive Officer of GIISDEC, Williams Okofo-Dateh on Tuesday (3 February), led a delegation from the Corporation on a courtesy call to the Turkish Embassy in Accra, where they were received by the Ambassador of Turkey to Ghana,  Hüseyin Güngör.

The meeting formed part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between GIISDEC and Turkey, particularly in investment promotion and capacity building within Ghana’s iron and steel industry.

A major focus of the discussions was Turkey’s well-established scrap industry and the regulatory systems that underpin its efficiency and sustainability.

Mr. Okofo-Dateh noted that Turkey’s extensive experience in scrap management offers valuable lessons for Ghana, especially as the country moves towards implementing a structured scrap policy to support domestic steel production. He expressed GIISDEC’s interest in studying Turkey’s regulatory framework and best practices to help develop a more organised, transparent and sustainable scrap market in Ghana.

In response, Ambassador Güngör shared insights into Turkey’s successful scrap regulatory system, outlining how clear policies, effective oversight and industry coordination have supported the growth of the sector.

He reaffirmed the Turkish Embassy’s commitment to supporting GIISDEC through knowledge sharing and cooperation aimed at building a resilient and efficient iron and steel industry in Ghana.
