Manteaw: Ghana’s mining sector needs local content fund, clear targets

Natural resource governance expert Dr Steve Manteaw has called for the establishment of a dedicated Local Content Fund to strengthen Ghanaian participation in the mining sector.
He said Ghana must adopt a clear and measurable strategy to achieve its local content objectives, with defined targets and performance benchmarks within a specified timeframe.
According to him, such a structured approach would provide direction and accountability in implementing local content policies.
Dr. Manteaw further urged government to pursue a partnership-based implementation model to boost investor confidence while ensuring meaningful participation of indigenous businesses.
He specifically proposed the creation of a Mining Local Content Fund, similar to the one in the oil and gas sector, to provide financial support to Ghanaian companies seeking to take advantage of opportunities on the mining procurement list.
His remarks follow the maiden Mining Local Content Summit held in Takoradi. The two-day event, themed “Strengthening Local Content and Indigenization: Building a Resilient Mining Sector in Ghana,” brought together industry stakeholders to deliberate on key issues affecting local participation in the mining industry.
