Morocco’s diesel imports jump, placing Kingdom 10th worldwide

Morocco ranked 10th among the world’s largest diesel-importing countries in 2025, following an increase of about 20,000 barrels per day, according to a recent report by the Attaqa energy platform.

The report said Morocco’s seaborne diesel imports reached an average of 99,000 barrels per day in 2025, up from 79,000 barrels per day in the previous year, reflecting a notable rise in fuel demand.

Globally, 10 countries dominated the diesel import market last year, together accounting for roughly 45% of total worldwide imports. Combined seaborne diesel shipments by these countries amounted to about 2.025 million barrels per day.

At the African level, Egypt and South Africa also ranked among the world’s top diesel importers. Egypt’s average imports increased from 101,000 barrels per day in 2024 to 126,000 barrels per day in 2025, while South Africa’s imports declined by 10,000 barrels per day, falling from 129,000 to 119,000 barrels per day, placing it ninth globally.

Australia topped the list of the world’s largest diesel importers, with average imports of 440,000 barrels per day. Brazil ranked second at 276,000 barrels per day, followed by Turkey with 271,000 barrels per day.

According to the report, global seaborne diesel imports rose steadily in 2023 and 2024 before recording a slight decline in 2025. Average imports fell by 5.8% year-on-year, or around 280,000 barrels per day, to approximately 4.55 million barrels per day.

Despite this drop in imports, global demand for diesel fuel, including red diesel, increased by 241,000 barrels per day in 2025, reaching 28.72 million barrels per day. Diesel remained the most widely us
