Rand Refinery has entered into a strategic partnership with Ghana’s Gold Coast Refinery (GCR) to support the local refining of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) gold and strengthen responsible sourcing standards in West Africa.

The partnership, announced on January 20, 2026, will support the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in its mandate to locally refine ASM gold while ensuring compliance with internationally recognised responsible sourcing and refining standards.

Under the arrangement, Rand Refinery will provide technical, operational and commercial support to Gold Coast Refinery through an Operational and Commercial Technical (TOC) supervision framework.

The collaboration is expected to enhance local refining capacity and improve transparency and ethical standards across the ASM gold value chain.

Gold Coast Refinery, established in 2016, is a gold refinery based in Accra with a current refining capacity exceeding 80 tonnes per annum and potential for future expansion.

The refinery has signed an agreement with the Ghana Gold Board to refine up to 1,000 kilograms of ASM gold dore per week, in line with responsible mining and sourcing standards. GoldBod is the sole entity authorised to buy, sell and export gold from small-scale miners in Ghana.

Rand Refinery, Africa’s leading London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery–accredited refiner, described the partnership as a significant milestone in supporting Ghana’s local refining ambitions.

The company said the collaboration aligns with the Government of Ghana’s objective of increasing domestic value addition in the gold sector.

The partnership will also focus on eliminating conflict gold, combating money laundering and ensuring environmental and social responsibility throughout the supply chain.

Rand Refinery applies strict audit and compliance processes and implements its “People, Planet, Product and Provenance” sustainability framework to promote environmental protection and community benefits.

Through the collaboration, Rand Refinery aims to further strengthen its presence on the African continent while supporting ethical sourcing, transparency and the development of Ghana’s ASM sector as a key contributor to economic growth.
