A group of students in Uganda has developed an innovative solar-powered tent that folds into a backpack, offering a portable shelter and energy solution for people without stable housing.

The lightweight tents are designed with flexible solar panels embedded in the fabric. During the day, the panels capture sunlight and store the energy in small built-in batteries.

At night, the stored power can be used to run LED lighting and charge mobile phones through USB ports, providing both illumination and basic connectivity in areas without access to electricity.

The entire structure is designed to fold into a compact backpack when not in use, making it easy to carry.

This feature makes the tents particularly useful for displaced families, refugees, and individuals experiencing homelessness who may need to move frequently while still having access to shelter and power.

The student-led innovation demonstrates how renewable energy technologies can be adapted to address humanitarian needs.

Portable solar systems such as the backpack tents can provide lighting in off-grid locations, improve safety at night, enable phone charging for communication, and offer temporary shelter during emergencies or displacement.

The project highlights the growing role of small-scale clean energy solutions in supporting vulnerable communities, showing how renewable energy innovations can contribute not only to environmental sustainability but also to human resilience and dignity
