The Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has held a high-level engagement with organised labour and key power sector stakeholders on Private Sector Participation (PSP) in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

The meeting brought together the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU), management of NEDCo, and representatives of various utility institutions, as part of Government’s commitment to sustained stakeholder consultation in the ongoing reform of the power sector.

According to the Minister, discussions during the engagement were frank, constructive and guided by data, with participants examining critical challenges confronting the electricity distribution segment of the power value chain.

Mr. Jinapor identified persistent weaknesses in billing and revenue collection as major concerns threatening the financial sustainability of the sector.

He warned that failure to decisively address these issues could undermine the long-term viability of Ghana’s power distribution system.

“What is not in doubt is that there is a major challenge within the distribution chain of the power sector, particularly in billing and collections,” the Minister noted, stressing the urgency of reforms.

He assured stakeholders that Government remains fully committed to implementing comprehensive solutions aimed at stabilising the sector, protecting public assets and ensuring reliable electricity supply nationwide.

The Minister emphasised that the overarching objective of Government’s engagement strategy is to safeguard the power sector while guaranteeing continuous and dependable electricity supply to households, businesses and the broader economy.

Government has indicated that stakeholder consultations will continue as part of efforts to build consensus around reforms designed to strengthen efficiency, accountability and sustainability within ECG, NEDCo and the wider power sector.
