Ghana: Mahama: Engineers and Planners grew on merit, not politics

President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed suggestions that political influence contributed to the rise of businessman Ibrahim Mahama, insisting that the success of Engineers and Planners is the result of discipline, competence and hard work.
Speaking at the 18th Special Congregation of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), where Ibrahim Mahama was awarded an Honorary Doctorate, the President said his brother’s business growth had occurred despite, not because of, his political position.
According to President Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama was subjected to heightened scrutiny whenever he served in office, noting that any perceived advantage would have immediately been attributed to political connections. He stressed that strict adherence to rules and due process was maintained to avoid conflicts of interest.
The President stated that Engineers and Planners expanded significantly during periods when he was out of government, which he said demonstrates the company’s resilience and independence from political influence.
He attributed Ibrahim Mahama’s achievements to consistency, reliability and professionalism, qualities that enabled the company to progress from subcontracting roles to becoming one of the largest indigenous mining contractors in West Africa.
President Mahama made the remarks while expressing appreciation to UMaT for honouring Ibrahim Mahama, describing the recognition as well deserved and reflective of his contribution to Ghana’s mining sector and indigenous enterprise development.
