Ghana: Gov’t will not merge Energy Commission and PURC without consensus

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, says government will not proceed with any proposed merger of the Energy Commission and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) without broad stakeholder consensus.
Mr Jinapor said he had engaged representatives of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) following concerns raised by some workers over the proposed merger of the two regulatory bodies.
According to the Minister, while reforms in the power sector are intended to improve efficiency and strengthen regulatory oversight, such changes will not be imposed without dialogue, transparency and mutual understanding.

He assured organised labour and other stakeholders that government remains committed to inclusive engagement as discussions on the proposed merger continue.
Mr Jinapor added that consensus-building will guide the reform process, with further consultations planned as deliberations progress.
