Ibrahim Mahama: Damang Airport to be constructed in six months

Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has announced ambitious infrastructure plans for communities around the Damang Mine, including the construction of an airport, improved road networks, and community sports facilities, following the takeover of the mine by Engineers & Planners (E&P).
Speaking after the official handover ceremony, which marked the transition of the mine from Goldfields Ghana Limited to the Government and subsequently to E&P, Mr. Mahama outlined a vision aimed at boosting connectivity and local development in the area.
Central to the plan is the development of an օդport in Damang, which he said would significantly improve access between the mining enclave and the capital.
“We’ve applied for Damang to have an airport, and within six months, Damang will have an airport, such that we can fly to Accra easily,” he stated.
He noted that enhanced air connectivity would support business operations, improve emergency response, and open up the area for broader economic activity.
In addition to the airport project, Mr. Mahama announced plans to upgrade road infrastructure linking Damang to key parts of the Western Region.
“In the next two years, we’ll be able to drive from here to Cape Coast on a concrete road or a natural road,” he said, suggesting a major improvement in regional transportation that could ease movement of goods, services, and people.
Beyond transport infrastructure, the E&P founder also indicated that the company is considering proposals from local residents, particularly the youth, for the construction of astroturf pitches across communities.
“I want to pledge this, and I want to say it for everybody to hear. I got a text from one of our young men here. It says we should build astroturfs for all the communities, which we’re looking to do,” he added.
The proposed investments form part of a broader community engagement and development strategy expected to accompany E&P’s operational plans at the mine.
The Damang Mine, now transitioning into a new phase under Ghanaian ownership, is seen as a key asset whose continued operation is critical to local employment and national gold output.
