Zambia hosts Africa’s first international mine rescue competition
Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing global mine safety standards at the opening of the inaugural International Mine Rescue Competition in Kitwe.
The event, the first of its kind to be hosted on the African continent, has drawn 22 elite mine rescue teams from across the world, including participants from Canada, Australia, China, India, Burkina Faso, Colombia, and Poland. It is expected to serve as a vital platform for sharing expertise, strengthening collaboration, and showcasing best practices in mine emergency response.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony at the Garden Court Hotel, Mr. Kabuswe underscored the growing importance of safety in an increasingly complex mining environment. He stressed that as mining activities expand globally, countries must work collectively to enhance preparedness and response systems.
He described mine rescue teams as critical to the industry, noting that their role during emergencies is indispensable and can determine outcomes in life-threatening situations.
The Minister highlighted Zambia’s ongoing efforts to improve safety standards through stricter regulatory enforcement, intensified inspections, and investments in modern rescue technologies. He added that hosting the international competition reflects Zambia’s rising influence in promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices.
