Zambia targets 3 million tonnes of copper as Mingomba Project takes off

President Hakainde Hichilema has officially launched shaft sinking works at the Mingomba Mine in Chililabombwe, describing the project as a major milestone for Zambia’s mining sector and economic growth.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Hichilema said the investment shows growing confidence in Zambia as a destination for business.
“Zambia is open for business. This is a demonstration that Zambia is open for business,” President Hichilema said.
The Head of State praised the partnership behind the project, saying Mingomba Mine will bring benefits beyond copper production through technology transfer, skills development, infrastructure growth and job creation.
“This partnership will drive success. It will help us deliver more benefits from Zambia’s mineral resources,” he said.
President Hichilema also advised the mine management to actualize the Local Content Policy by creating more opportunities for Zambian suppliers, contractors and workers to participate in the project.
“Let us make the local content principle work. Where we have testing challenges, let us deal with those challenges so that we can have more Zambians participating in this,” he said.
President Hichilema said government remains committed to creating a stable and supportive environment for investors by improving regulations, fighting corruption and strengthening the country’s operating climate.
“Do not pay bribes to anyone. Report anyone who wants a bribe,” he said.
The President said Zambia is targeting increased copper production of three million metric tonnes and projects such as Mingomba will play a key role in achieving that goal.
He urged surrounding communities to protect the investment and take advantage of business opportunities expected from the mine’s development.
“This is your investment. Protect this investment and look after these assets,” he said.
President Hichilema further noted that Zambia values long-standing partnerships with countries such as the United States, saying cooperation is helping unlock the country’s mineral potential.
The Mingomba Mine project is expected to become one of the major copper-producing operations in the country once fully developed.
