Ghana: EPA cautions against unauthorized reclamation activities

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has directed all individuals and organisations undertaking land, mine and water body reclamation projects to obtain an Environmental Permit before commencing work, in accordance with the Environmental Protection (Environmental Assessment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2504).

The EPA said the requirement, contained in Regulation 40 of the regulations, applies to mine reclamation and rehabilitation activities, restoration of degraded lands, rehabilitation of abandoned mine pits, backfilling and reshaping of excavated areas, revegetation and ecological restoration projects, dredging and restoration of water bodies, as well as any activity intended to restore disturbed land and aquatic ecosystems.

The Authority urged mining companies, contractors, landowners, developers, investors and other stakeholders to comply with the requirement.

According to the EPA, failure to obtain the required Environmental Permit could attract sanctions under the Environmental Protection (Environmental Assessment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2504).
