The Ghana Chamber of Mines has strongly condemned recent xenophobic attacks against Ghanaians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, calling on authorities there to ensure the safety and protection of all residents and visitors.

Speaking at the opening of the 19th West African Mining and Power Exhibition (WAMPEX 2026) in Accra on Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Ing Ken Ashigbey, described the attacks as unacceptable and contrary to the values of dignity, inclusion and cooperation.

“We call on all leaders to condemn these actions and urge the South African authorities to ensure the safety and protection of all residents and visitors,” he said.

Ing Ashigbey, however, stressed that the Chamber continues to value the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between Ghana and South Africa despite the recent incidents.

His remarks came as mining industry leaders, investors, policymakers and development partners gathered in Accra for WAMPEX 2026, a major regional mining and energy conference expected to attract more than 6,000 participants, over 250 exhibitors and representatives from more than 20 countries.

The Chamber used the platform to reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to a stable and investor-friendly mining environment, noting government assurances that mining lease decisions would be handled on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the law and that nationalisation of mines is not government policy.

WAMPEX 2026, being held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel from June 3 to 5, is focused on exploring how responsible mining and reliable power can accelerate sustainable development across West Africa.
