Key stakeholders in Ghana’s power sector have met to validate the 2026 Integrated Power System Master Plan (IPSMP), reviewing the country’s future electricity needs, generation capacity and potential for power exports.

The validation meeting was led by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Ms. Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, and brought together representatives from the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), Nuclear Power Ghana, Bui Power Authority, and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

Ms. Bondzie underscored the importance of coordinated and evidence-based planning in securing Ghana’s future electricity supply.

Stakeholders reviewed issues raised in the plan using data, technical analysis and practical experience, while members of the IPSMP Technical Group responded to comments and provided additional technical input.

Discussions focused on Ghana’s projected electricity demand, the generation capacity required to be held in reserve, and the potential for power exports.

Participants also considered the role of solar photovoltaic (PV), small-scale hydro, gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Ghana’s future electricity generation mix.

The IPSMP goes beyond electricity demand forecasting by providing an integrated assessment of the country’s generation, transmission, distribution and energy-resource requirements. It is intended to help relevant institutions align their planning and investment decisions.

The validation exercise is expected to support more coordinated and resilient power-sector planning, with stakeholders drawing on data and technical collaboration to guide decisions on Ghana’s future electricity system.
