Dr Frank Boateng, Director of the Institute of Minerals Resource Investments and Governance (IMRIG) , has facilitated a training session on financing Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector as part of efforts to promote financial inclusion and responsible mining practices.

The session formed part of an ongoing capacity-building programme for financial institutions under the GOLD+ Project, which is aimed at strengthening financial inclusion and supporting responsible gold supply chains in the ASGM sector.

Speaking on “Financing the ASGM Sector,” Dr Boateng discussed the role of financial institutions in expanding access to finance for artisanal and small-scale miners while supporting the sector’s formalisation and sustainable development.

The training seeks to improve participants’ understanding of the ASGM sector and strengthen their ability to assess risks associated with financing mining activities. It also aims to equip financial institutions with the knowledge to develop financial products tailored to the needs of artisanal and small-scale miners.

The programme further focuses on increasing access to finance for responsible mining operations, supporting the transition to mercury-free mining practices, and promoting sustainable and formalised gold supply chains.

The initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between the financial sector and the mining industry, enabling greater financial inclusion while encouraging responsible mining practices and sustainable livelihoods across Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector.
