EPA consults stakeholders on offshore mineral exploration programme
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has held a stakeholder engagement to discuss a proposed offshore reconnaissance project covering Ghana’s coastline from Half-Assini in the Western Region to Winneba in the Central Region.
The meeting, held at the Accra City Hotel, brought together representatives from technical, academic and government institutions to review the proposed GoldCoast GRC Reconnaissance Programme and identify potential concerns for both the current and future phases of the project.
The engagement was conducted in accordance with the Environmental Assessment Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2504), and Ghana’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures.
Participating institutions included the Minerals Commission, Petroleum Commission, Ghana Navy, Fisheries Commission, the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast.
According to presentations made at the meeting, the proposed reconnaissance programme is a non-invasive scientific study aimed at identifying potential offshore mineral deposits. The survey will employ airborne geophysical techniques and magnetometry mapping and will not involve excavation or the physical removal of seabed materials.
The stakeholder consultation forms part of the environmental assessment process required before the project can proceed to subsequent stages. It is intended to gather input from relevant institutions and address issues relating to environmental protection, marine resources and regulatory compliance.
