Ghana: Fisheries Ministry, AquaMet explore digital solutions to cut fish farming losses

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture is exploring a partnership with Ghanaian aquaculture technology company AquaMet Technologies to deploy digital solutions aimed at improving fish farming productivity and reducing production losses.

The engagement followed a presentation by AquaMet Technologies to the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. It was facilitated by the Chamber of Aquaculture, with its Chief Executive Officer, Jacob Adzikah, in attendance.

AquaMet Technologies Co-Founder Frank Owusu said the company develops digital tools to help fish farmers improve production decisions and minimise losses.

Among the solutions presented was a locally manufactured smart water-quality monitoring device that allows farmers to remotely monitor ponds and tanks and receive real-time alerts on their mobile phones.

The company also operates a farm-management platform that enables farmers to track feeding, inventories, production activities and costs.

Minister Emelia Arthur welcomed the engagement and the involvement of Ghanaian innovators in addressing challenges in the aquaculture sector.

She said effective monitoring of water-quality parameters is critical to fish production and welcomed technology that can detect abnormalities and provide farmers with guidance on appropriate responses.

The Minister, however, stressed that technologies introduced to farmers must be simple, practical and accessible, particularly for farmers with varying levels of digital literacy.

The engagement forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with local technology companies and promote digital solutions to support the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s aquaculture industry.
