Ghana: MIIF, B5 Plus discuss local production of grinding media, mining consumables

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has engaged steel manufacturer B5 Plus Limited to explore opportunities to expand local manufacturing of inputs used by Ghana’s mining industry.
The engagement focused particularly on the local production of grinding media and other mill consumables, as MIIF seeks to deepen local participation and value creation across the mining value chain.
A delegation led by MIIF Chief Executive Officer, Justina Nelson, toured B5 Plus’ steel fabrication, melting, rolling, grinding media, aluminium and engineering plants.

The visit provided the MIIF delegation with first-hand information on the company’s production capacity, operations, regulatory compliance and environmental, social and governance practices.

The engagement also sought to strengthen MIIF’s strategic relationship with players in Ghana’s steel manufacturing sector and identify areas for increased local production of materials required by mining companies.

The initiative forms part of efforts to advance the government’s local content and local participation agenda in the mining sector, in line with the Minerals and Mining (Local Content and Local Participation) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2431).
The engagement comes amid efforts to increase the participation of Ghanaian companies in the supply of goods and services to the mining industry and retain more value from mineral production within the domestic economy.
