Ghana: Minerals Commission hands over new astroturf complex to Kenyasi communities
The Minerals Commission has commissioned a multipurpose astroturf sports complex at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region, aimed at supporting sports development and improving social infrastructure in mining communities.
The facility, located in Kenyasi No. 1, is expected to serve residents of Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotoroso and surrounding communities.
The complex includes an Olympic-size synthetic football pitch, regulation athletics tracks and a spectator stand with capacity for more than 500 people. It also has changing rooms, an infirmary and other supporting facilities.
At the commissioning ceremony, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Dr Yusif Suleman, commended the traditional authorities of Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2 and Ntotoroso, the Asutifi North District Assembly and Newmont Ghana for their contributions to the project.
Dr Suleman said the facility demonstrated the government’s commitment to ensuring that communities hosting mining operations benefit from the mineral resources extracted from their areas.
He said mining communities should be treated as active partners in development and stressed the importance of investments in social infrastructure.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, said the Commission’s responsibility extended beyond regulating mining activities.
He said communities hosting mining operations must be able to see and feel tangible benefits from mineral resource extraction.
According to Mr Tandoh, the Kenyasi facility represents an effort to connect the economic value generated from mining with the wellbeing of host communities.
The commissioning brought together the Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner; traditional authorities from the three participating communities; Minerals Commission board members; Newmont Ahafo Mine Managing Director Danquah Addo-Yobo; and officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the mining industry.
The Minerals Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible mineral development while ensuring that mining contributes to inclusive and sustainable development in host communities.
