KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) has rewarded its 14,500 employees and business partner workers with gift vouchers after the company achieved a monthly copper production milestone of 10,000 tonnes in July.
KCM chief executive officer Malcolm Mewett said the reward was intended to recognise the workforce’s collective effort, commitment and safety performance.
Mr Mewett described the achievement as a significant milestone, noting that the July output was the first time KCM had reached 10,000 tonnes in a single month, up from previous production levels of between 8,000 and 9,000 tonnes.
He said the output represented more than 11 percent of Zambia’s approximately 90,000-tonne monthly copper production target for 2026.
KCM is targeting increased production as it works towards producing 300,000 tonnes of copper annually.
Mr Mewett urged employees to maintain the momentum while prioritising safety, saying increased production must go hand in hand with safe working practices.
National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) chairman Henry Mwape welcomed the achievement.
