Minerals Commission hosts Guinean delegation for strategic dialogue on sustainable mining

A high-level delegation from Guinea’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has engaged the Minerals Commission in Accra to learn from Ghana’s experience in regulating artisanal and small-scale mining and promoting environmental sustainability in the extractive sector.

The visit forms part of efforts by the two countries to deepen bilateral cooperation on mining governance, environmental protection and sustainable resource management.

The meeting, held at the Minerals Commission’s headquarters, brought together senior Guinean officials with the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, Isaac Tandoh, and members of the management team. Discussions focused on Ghana’s regulatory framework for artisanal and small-scale mining, with particular attention to reforms aimed at formalising the sector, strengthening compliance and promoting responsible mining practices that protect communities and the environment.

The dialogue also highlighted Ghana’s government-led land reclamation initiatives, which are restoring degraded mining sites into productive landscapes. The Commission outlined its integrated approach to reclamation, combining environmental restoration with alternative livelihood programmes in agriculture, vocational training and sustainable enterprise development for affected communities.

The engagement underscored the importance of knowledge-sharing and institutional collaboration in advancing sound mining governance across the region. The Guinean delegation expressed strong interest in Ghana’s model of environmental stewardship, particularly the Commission’s role in coordinating inter-agency efforts involving the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forestry Commission and the Water Resources Commission to ensure effective oversight of the sector.

The visit concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to the responsible development of mineral resources and the protection of the environment for future generations. The Minerals Commission reiterated its dedication to strengthening regional partnerships that promote sustainable development across Africa’s mining sector.
