Power restoration underway after widespread outage hits parts of Ghana

Power restoration is underway in several parts of Ghana after a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line disrupted electricity supply early Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants.
The protection mechanism was activated to safeguard the stability of the national power transmission system, resulting in power outages in several parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and began a systematic restoration of the system.
Power has already been restored to some affected areas, with restoration efforts continuing to reconnect all remaining customers.
GRIDCo said its technical teams have been fully mobilised and are working to complete the restoration safely and as quickly as possible.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that further updates would be provided as restoration progresses.
