A Rocha Ghana has released a documentary highlighting the pressure illegal mining is placing on the river sources within Ghana’s Atewa Forest, where the Ayensu, Densu and Birim rivers originate.
Titled GOLD RUSH: Inside the Headwater Atewa, the Source Facing a Slow Avoidable Death, the documentary takes viewers into the Atewa landscape to document activities affecting the forest and its river headwaters.
The organisation released the documentary to mark World Rivers Day, drawing attention to the importance of protecting river sources from activities that could affect downstream water resources, farms, communities and livelihoods.
“When the source of a river is disturbed, the impacts do not stay in the forest. They travel downstream, affecting water, farms, communities and livelihoods,” A Rocha Ghana said.
The documentary forms part of the organisation’s efforts to raise public awareness about pressures on the Atewa landscape and the need to protect its critical water sources.
