Mining activities continue to cause severe environmental degradation in the Dormaa communities of Maasu, Kwakubedikrom, and Yawbofokrom.
Photographic evidence from these communities reveals widespread destruction of farmlands, abandoned mining pits, and the pollution of major rivers that sustain local livelihoods.
The mining operations have significantly impacted River Maasu, River Twapeasie, and River Efo, turning once-clean water sources into muddy and contaminated rivers unsuitable for domestic use, farming, and aquatic life.
Equally alarming are the numerous abandoned mining pits left uncovered after operations.
These open pits pose serious dangers to residents, particularly children and farmers, while also reducing productive agricultural land and creating breeding grounds for disease-carrying insects.
River Masu
The continued destruction of these critical ecosystems threatens food security, public health, and the livelihoods of affected communities.
Residents are calling on government authorities, environmental agencies, traditional leaders, and all relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to stop illegal mining, reclaim degraded lands, restore polluted rivers, and hold those responsible accountable.
Protecting these natural resources is essential to ensuring a safe and sustainable future for the people of Dormaa.
