The Ghana Chamber of Mines, in conjunction with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), has officially launched Ghana’s first National Standards for Grinding Media.

The event, held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, marks a decisive step toward strengthening local manufacturing and asserting standards sovereignty within the country’s flagship mining industry.

The launch brought together key stakeholders from the mining industry, manufacturing sector, regulatory bodies, and the media.

Grinding media — steel balls used in ball mills and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills — play a critical role in mineral processing, where they are subjected to intense impact, abrasion, and corrosive slurry conditions.

In a remark, Professor George Agyei, the Director-General of the GSA, pledged that the Authority would develop the infrastructure to make the Grinding Media Standards fully operational, establishing testing protocols, accrediting facilities capable of conducting the relevant tests, and engaging industry on realistic implementation timeliness.
