Energy Minister John Jinapor has announced the full restoration of power across the country following a major disruption caused by a fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in Akosombo.

In a statement shared on Friday, the Minister confirmed that all generation units are now back in service, signalling the successful stabilisation of the national grid after days of intensive emergency response efforts.

“Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service,” Mr. Jinapor stated, praising the resilience and dedication of engineers and technical teams who worked around the clock to restore electricity supply.

The disruption began on Thursday, April 23, when a fire broke out at the GRIDCo substation at approximately 2:01 p.m., affecting power generation and transmission and leading to outages in several parts of the country.

GRIDCo, in an earlier statement, indicated that emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to contain the situation and begin restoration efforts. The company also initiated a comprehensive assessment to determine the extent of damage and guide repair works.

According to the Energy Minister, coordinated efforts by key institutions—including GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and other supporting agencies—were instrumental in resolving the crisis.

“In the face of a major system disruption, and against all odds, our engineers, technicians, and emergency teams worked tirelessly to restore power and stabilise the grid,” he noted.

Mr. Jinapor commended the commitment and discipline of personnel involved in the restoration process, describing their efforts as a demonstration of Ghana’s technical capacity to respond effectively under pressure.
