Ghana: TOR receives 1 million barrels of Bonga Crude to boost refining operations

Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has received approximately one million barrels of Bonga Crude Oil as part of efforts to revive its refining operations and strengthen Ghana’s energy security.

The crude oil cargo arrived aboard the MT Cap Felix on May 27, 2026. TOR said the shipment was purchased from Shell and supplied through its tolling partner, Fujeirah/Triangle Commodities Trading (TCT).

According to the refinery, the arrangement forms part of its ongoing operational recovery programme aimed at ensuring a stable supply of petroleum products to the Ghanaian market.

TOR described the arrival of the crude as a major milestone in efforts to restore steady refining activities and reduce the country’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products.

The refinery noted that Bonga Crude is a high-quality low-sulphur crude oil with favourable refining yields. It is expected to produce significant quantities of LPG, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, aviation turbine kerosene (ATK) and fuel oil for both domestic and regional markets.

Management of TOR expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana, regulatory agencies, financial institutions and other stakeholders for supporting the refinery’s recovery efforts.

The refinery also reaffirmed its commitment to operational excellence, transparency, environmental responsibility and its long-term goal of becoming a competitive and sustainable energy hub for Ghana and the West African sub-region.
