South Africa’s mineworkers union condemns xenophobic attacks on African migrants

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in South Africa has condemned recent attacks, intimidation, and violence against African migrants amid rising tensions in parts of the country. In a statement, the union described the assaults, destruction of property, threats, and xenophobic acts targeting foreign nationals as unacceptable and contrary to the spirit of African unity and solidarity. The NUM said it supports the constitutional right of South Africans to engage in peaceful protest but stressed that demonstrations should not be used to justify criminality, intimidation, or attacks on vulnerable communities. The union noted that migrant workers from countries including Lesotho, Mozambique, Eswatini, Botswana, and Namibia have historically contributed to South Africa’s mining sector and remain an important part of its membership. It also highlighted its long-standing relationships with trade unions across Africa on issues relating to labour rights and regional cooperation. The NUM called on the South African government, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to act swiftly to restore calm, protect all workers, and ensure that those responsible for violence are brought to justice. At the same time, the union urged government to address concerns over unemployment, crime, and border management through effective policy interventions and fair enforcement of immigration laws. The union appealed to workers and communities to reject xenophobia and promote peaceful coexistence and solidarity among Africans.
