Gold Fields partners UMaT, EPA and AngloGold Ashanti to champion climate action

Gold Fields Ghana, in collaboration with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Tarkwa, has marked this year’s World Environment Day with a call for stronger climate action, renewable energy adoption, forest expansion and sustainable waste management.
The celebration, held under the theme “A Call for Climate Action: Renewable Energy, Forest Expansion, and Zero Waste Initiative,” brought together stakeholders from academia, the mining industry, government and local communities to promote environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
Ahead of the main event, the partners organised a week-long programme of activities across the mine and host communities. The programme included toolbox talks on climate change and sustainability, community outreach at transport stations, radio discussions and public awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging environmental stewardship.

As part of the activities, students from UMaT presented a range of innovative projects designed to address climate and environmental challenges through technology and sustainable practices.
The projects included Smart Composting, Smart Eco-Digester, Smart Rainwater Harvesting, Smart Solar Irrigation, a Solar-Powered Automatic Dust Suppression System and a Biomass Briquette Press.
The Green Bin Team emerged winners with their Smart Composting project, which was recognised for its potential contribution to sustainable waste management.

The celebration culminated in a symposium at the UMaT auditorium, where participants discussed practical approaches to tackling climate change and advancing environmental sustainability.
Delivering the keynote address, Senior Manager for Environment and Laboratories at Gold Fields Ghana, John Kwasi Adingelah, highlighted the company’s efforts in forest conservation and progressive land rehabilitation.

He outlined ongoing initiatives aimed at restoring mined lands and promoting responsible environmental management.
The event underscored the importance of partnerships among industry, academia and regulators in advancing climate action, fostering innovation and supporting sustainable development in Ghana.
