Ghana: Ningo, Subriso residents protest frequent blasting at Golden Star Wassa Mine

Residents of Ningo, Subriso and other communities within the Benso Electoral Area of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality have raised serious concerns over what they describe as excessive blasting activities by Golden Star Resources’ Wassa Mine.

According to the residents, the frequent and intense blasting has made life increasingly difficult, with some claiming they are unable to sleep peacefully in their homes because of the vibrations and noise generated by the mining operations.

They said the situation has become a major disturbance, affecting their comfort and overall well-being. Some residents have also expressed concerns about the possible impact of the continuous blasting on their buildings and other properties.

The affected residents are therefore calling on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission and other relevant regulatory bodies to urgently intervene and ensure that Golden Star Resources’ Wassa Mine complies with all applicable safety and environmental regulations governing blasting activities.

They are also appealing to the authorities to engage the mining company and work towards a lasting solution to the challenges facing the affected communities.

While acknowledging the economic benefits of mining to the area, the residents said their right to a peaceful and safe living environment must also be protected.

They are consequently urging the relevant authorities to investigate the concerns and take appropriate measures to address the situation.
