Gold Fields says disputes with its Ghanaian mining contractor, Engineers and Planners (E&P), are progressing to arbitration following historical claims linked to the Tarkwa and Damang mining contracts.

The company disclosed in its latest quarterly update that it received notices of dispute from E&P in March 2026, relating to past contractual claims associated with operations at the two mines.

According to Gold Fields, engagements have since taken place between both parties, but the matter will now be settled through arbitration.

The claims are reportedly valued at about $474.9 million in relation to Tarkwa and $264.7 million linked to Damang. Gold Fields has formally rejected the claims, stating that it disagrees with E&P’s position and, based on legal advice, considers them to lack merit.

The development comes shortly after the formal transfer of the Damang Mine to the Government of Ghana on April 18, 2026, following the expiry of Gold Fields’ 12-month mining lease.

The dispute comes as Gold Fields also pursues renewal of its Tarkwa mining leases while navigating ongoing regulatory changes in Ghana’s mining sector, including revised royalty regimes and broader reforms aimed at increasing state participation in mining revenues.

Gold Fields says it remains focused on defending its position through legal channels while ensuring operational stability at Tarkwa and managing ongoing regulatory and contractual developments in Ghana’s mining sector.
