Reports of illegal mining in Atewa Forest receiving urgent attention – NAIMOS
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) says reports of illegal mining and encroachment within the Atewa Range Forest Reserve are receiving urgent attention.
The assurance follows concerns raised by civil society organisations over reported illegal mining activities in the forest.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, NAIMOS said it had taken note of recent public and media reports on illegal mining and encroachment within the reserve, as well as concerns raised by A Rocha Ghana and other groups at a press conference on Monday.
NAIMOS said it had already conducted initial assessment operations within the reserve and was collaborating with relevant security and state agencies to take further action.
It said the next intervention would be guided by verified intelligence and further operational assessment.
NAIMOS stressed that the protection of Ghana’s forest reserves, water sources and ecologically sensitive areas remains critical to the fight against illegal mining.
The Secretariat assured the public that concerns over the Atewa Range Forest Reserve would not be ignored and encouraged civil society organisations, traditional authorities, communities and members of the public to provide credible information to support efforts against illegal mining.
