At least five miners have been rescued alive after being trapped underground for 17 days at the Matala Gold Mine in Zambia’s Mumbwa District, the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has announced.
The rescued miners are currently receiving medical treatment at Mumbwa District Hospital.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Dr Hapenga Kabeta, said preliminary assessments indicate that three more miners may still be trapped underground, with rescue operations continuing at the site.
The government commended emergency responders, local authorities and other stakeholders involved in the rescue mission for their dedication during the operation.
The ministry also reiterated the importance of safe and regulated mining practices, urging small-scale miners to comply with safety standards and legal requirements to help prevent similar incidents.
Authorities say they will continue monitoring the situation and provide further updates as rescue efforts progress.
