IMF, Zimbabwe review mining sector performance and economic targets

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation has held discussions with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Mines and Mining Development on the performance of the country’s mining sector, economic targets and ongoing policy reforms.
The IMF team, led by Zimbabwe Mission Chief Wojciech Maliszewski, met with a delegation headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Dr. Thomas Utete Wushe.
The discussions focused on key quantitative targets and structural benchmarks, while also reviewing the outlook for the mining sector, emerging risks and recent developments.
During the meeting, Dr. Wushe highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding mineral exploration and advancing value addition and beneficiation policies aimed at promoting sustainable growth and strengthening Zimbabwe’s economic position.
Zimbabwe’s mining industry remains a key contributor to the economy, serving as the country’s leading source of foreign currency earnings and supporting national development efforts.
The ministry noted that despite volatility in global commodity markets, demand for minerals remains strong, driven by the global energy transition and continued infrastructure investments worldwide.
Officials also highlighted recent policy reforms designed to improve transparency and governance in the sector, measures they said have helped boost investor confidence.
According to the ministry, progress in the mining sector is being monitored under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) 2026–2030, which seeks to position Zimbabwe to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030.
